This is a circular walk that begins and ends at Earshaig Lochans Nature Reserve – and takes in so much more.
A bus will take us up the Crooked Road to Earshaig where we'll get a good look at modern commercial forestry in action. Most of the forest has recently been cut and replanted, so we'll see all stages of a commercial forest's life.
We'll then head east on the farm track which will take us through several working farms and past a great deal of sheep. A few of these farms have relatively contemporary houses, but still have the picturesque ruins of the original farmhouses and outbuildings close by. Great for photographers and lovers of history alike.

After a few miles on pretty flat ground there are a few steady, but steep, climbs that will give us tremendous views of Hart Fell and the Devil's Beef Tub. This is a great place to spot birds of prey. Ravens, kestrels and red kites are all seen regularly, while peregrine falcons, goshawks, and golden eagles have been spotted by those in the know.
The final part of the walk is downhill on the Southern Upland Way. We'll pass Garpol Water where there are two sites of historic importance: a Moated Homestead and a Motte and Bailey, both of which date back to the 12th century.
Lastly, we'll take in the Earshaig Lochans at the end, where we could well see the arrival of our winter thrushes.
Ria grew up in Moffat and loves the great outdoors, so knows the area inside out. Having recently returned after some time away, she is enjoying rediscovering the Moffat countryside and the many walking opportunities Moffat has to offer. As a firm believer in the benefits being out in nature confers, Ria is keen to share her enjoyment of walking in the area with others, and she looks forward to welcoming new walkers to Moffat and its wild landscape.
